How many guesses do I get in the Character puzzle?

Guesses are unlimited. The puzzle is about narrowing down the answer with the clues each guess reveals, not about racing a limited budget.

Does everyone get the same Final Fantasy character?

Yes. The answer is drawn from the roster by date, so every player worldwide gets the same character on the same day. It changes at 00:00 UTC.

Which Final Fantasy games are included?

All sixteen numbered entries plus direct sequels, the Ivalice games, the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, the MMOs and several spin-offs: 42 titles in total, from Final Fantasy (1987) to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024).

What does an orange tile mean?

Orange means partially correct. On the job tile it means you share at least one class with the answer but not the full set. On the debut year tile it means you are within three years, and the arrow points towards the correct year.

The daily Final Fantasy character puzzle

Every day this puzzle picks one character out of the 518 in the finalfantasydle roster, and your job is to work out who it is. You type the name of any character you like, and the board answers with seven columns of clues comparing your guess to the hidden answer. There is no guess limit and no account: the point is deduction, not speed.

The roster spans 42 Final Fantasy titles, from the 1987 original through to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. It reaches well past the sixteen numbered games: Ivalice (Tactics, Tactics Advance, Vagrant Story), the whole Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, both MMOs, and spin-offs like The 4 Heroes of Light and Stranger of Paradise. If a character appears in more than one game, they are filed under the game they appeared in first, which is worth remembering when the source game tile turns red on a guess you were sure about.

Reading the seven tiles

Green means exact, red means wrong, and orange means partially right. Two tiles behave differently from the rest, and they are the ones that win you the puzzle:

Gender	Male, female, or other. Other is reserved for genuinely genderless beings, such as fal'Cie and the Cloud of Darkness, whose game data lists no gender at all.
Race	33 values. Most of the roster is human, but the MMOs and Ivalice bring Elezen, Miqo'te, Lalafell, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Galka, Bangaa, Nu Mou and more.
Job / class	Multi-value. A character can hold two classes, so this tile turns orange when you match one of them but not the whole set.
Weapon	The signature weapon, the one from the official art, not everything the character can equip. Characters who do not fight carry none.
Role	Protagonist, party member, antagonist or NPC. Party covers anyone who fights in your group, including AI-controlled guests.
Source game	The game of first appearance, so remakes never count as a debut.
Debut year	Numeric. An arrow points towards the answer, and the tile turns orange when you land within three years.

Opening strategy

A good first guess is not your favourite character, it is the one that splits the roster most evenly. Some numbers from the current pool that make the difference:

The roster is not evenly spread across games. The best-represented titles are Final Fantasy Tactics (36 characters), Final Fantasy VII (31), Type-0 (28), then Final Fantasy XII and XIV (27 each). Opening inside a large cast gives the year and era arrows something useful to point at.
Gender splits roughly two to one (345 male, 151 female, 22 other), so it rarely eliminates much on its own.
Weapon is the strongest single filter. 171 of the 518 carry none and 108 carry a sword; everything else is thinly spread. Guessing a sword-wielder is informative whichever way the tile lands.
Use the year arrow before the game tile. Debut years run from 1987 to 2024 with a median of 2003, so one arrow cuts the field roughly in half. The era tile then confirms the block: retro (up to 1994), PS1 (1995–2000), PS2 (2001–2008), modern (2009 onwards).
Antagonists outnumber protagonists six to one (204 against 35). A red protagonist tile barely narrows anything, but a green one is close to a solve.

In practice, a mainline lead from the middle of the timeline (someone from Final Fantasy X or XII) tends to give the most workable first board.

Where the data comes from

Every attribute shown on the board is sourced from the games and the Final Fantasy wiki, and checked against a written rules document before it goes live: first appearance is decided by original Japanese release date, jobs come from the class the game actually names, and the signature weapon is the one the character carries in official art. Attributes the source material genuinely does not settle are left neutral rather than guessed.

Why did the source game tile go red for a character I know is in that game?

Because the tile tracks the game a character appeared in first. Cissnei is filed under Before Crisis (2004) rather than Crisis Core, and nobody who existed in the 1997 Final Fantasy VII is filed under Remake or Rebirth.
