The daily Final Fantasy emoji puzzle

Five emoji, one Final Fantasy character — but you do not get all five at once. The puzzle opens on a single glyph and hands you the next one with every wrong guess. The rebus is not a sentence and the order means nothing: each glyph stands for one trait of the person behind it, and your job is to work out which traits would make someone pick exactly those symbols.

It is the most lateral of the five puzzles. The character grid rewards knowing data, the quote puzzle rewards knowing dialogue; this one rewards knowing what a character is about: the object they carry, the thing they did, the place they come from.

What the five emoji stand for

Every rebus is hand-written rather than generated, and each glyph is picked from one of these angles:

  • Weapon or tool: the sword, spear, gun or cards the character is known for.
  • Job or role: magic for a mage, a crown for royalty, a wrench for an engineer.
  • A story beat: the single event most associated with them. These are usually the decisive glyphs.
  • A place: their home town, nation or the world they belong to.
  • A visual signature: hair colour, an animal companion, a piece of clothing.

A rebus that could describe twenty characters is a bad rebus, so the set is deliberately weighted towards the specific over the generic. If a glyph looks oddly precise, that is the one to build your guess on.

Clues, and the sharing rule

Two things unlock together on every wrong guess: the next glyph of the rebus, and the next of five clues. A miss is never wasted, which is why opening on one emoji is playable rather than punishing — by the fourth miss the whole rebus is on screen alongside four clues.

The clues are the same five as the quote puzzle: source game, debut year, race, job, then the first letter of the name. None of them is spelled out by the emoji themselves, so they genuinely add information rather than confirming what you already see. Positions you have not earned yet show a dormant crystal instead of a blank, so you can always see how much of the rebus is still to come.

One deliberate omission: the rebus is never included in the share text. Your result posts as green and black squares only. Posting the five emoji would let anyone solve the day's puzzle straight from the post, which would defeat the point of a daily game.

Common questions

Why do I only see one emoji at the start?

The rebus unlocks one glyph at a time. You open with a single emoji, and each wrong guess reveals the next one, so all five are on screen from the fourth miss onwards. Solving it reveals the whole rebus immediately. The locked positions show a dormant crystal rather than a blank, so you always know how many glyphs are still to come.

Does every character have a rebus?

No. Only characters with a curated five-emoji riddle can be the answer, so the pool is smaller than the character puzzle's.

Does the order of the emoji matter?

No. Read them as a set of five independent hints.

The emoji look different on my device.

Emoji are rendered by your operating system, so Apple, Android and Windows draw them differently. The rebuses avoid glyphs whose meaning changes between platforms.
