The daily Final Fantasy quote puzzle
One line of dialogue, one question: who said it? The quote is presented as a redacted file, and if the line happens to contain the speaker's own name, that name is blacked out: a quote that names its speaker is not a puzzle. Everything else is exactly as written in the game.
The answer pool is 257 characters, smaller than the other modes, and that is deliberate. Only characters with a genuine, sourced line of dialogue are eligible. A character with nothing iconic to say simply never comes up, which keeps the puzzle solvable instead of turning it into a lottery over 500 names.
Five clues, one per wrong guess
Below the quote sit five crystals that light up one at a time as you miss. They are ordered from broad to decisive, so an early solve is worth far more than a late one:
| 1. Source game | The game the character first appeared in. |
|---|---|
| 2. Debut year | Confirms the era when the game itself is ambiguous. |
| 3. Race | Human for most of the roster, but decisive for the MMOs and Ivalice. |
| 4. Job / class | The character's primary class. |
| 5. Initial | The first letter of the name. Usually enough to finish. |
None of these five is a tile on the character grid, so the two modes reward different knowledge: this one rewards knowing how a character talks.
How the quotes are vetted
This is the mode where accuracy matters most, because a misattributed line is not a hard puzzle, it is an unsolvable one. Every quote in the pool must be a line the character actually speaks in a Final Fantasy work, verified against its source. Four things are specifically excluded:
- Character bios. Third-person blurbs such as "A mysterious young woman, born with the gift of magic" are description, not dialogue.
- Narration about the character rather than by them.
- Lines spoken by someone else. A common trap: reference pages sometimes display a quote on a character's page that another character delivers. Ward Zabac's most-quoted line is actually spoken by Kiros.
- Invocations addressed to a deity, which read like the deity's own words but are not. The prayers to Etro, Lindzei and Pulse are spoken to them, not by them.
Where no genuine line can be sourced, the character is left out of the pool rather than given an invented one. A smaller honest pool beats a larger wrong one.
Common questions
The quote sounds like a translation. Which one is used?
The English release script, as shipped in the game. Lines are never paraphrased or re-translated.
Why is a famous character never the answer?
Because no line of theirs could be sourced with confidence. That is a deliberate omission, not an oversight.
Do I get unlimited guesses?
Yes, though each wrong guess spends one of the five clues.
