The daily Final Fantasy silhouette puzzle
One Final Fantasy portrait, blacked out and drained of colour. It sharpens a little with every wrong guess, so the puzzle becomes a race between your knowledge of the series and the blur giving the answer away for free. Solve it early and you have recognised a character from almost nothing; solve it late and the picture has done the work for you.
The pool is the same 518 characters as the character puzzle, drawn across 42 games. That breadth matters here: a silhouette from Final Fantasy VI's pixel era reads very differently from a modern Final Fantasy XVI render, and the visual style of the portrait is itself a clue about which decade you are looking at.
How the reveal works
The portrait begins at maximum blur in greyscale, and each wrong guess strips a fixed amount away. Two further hints sit above the image and unlock as you go:
- Debut game: the title the character first appeared in. On its own this usually narrows the field to a few dozen.
- Initial: the first letter of the name.
Winning restores the portrait to full colour. There is no guess limit, but there is no reward for brute force either: the image will eventually resolve on its own, so the interesting version of this puzzle is the one where you commit early.
Reading a blurred portrait
Silhouettes carry more information than they first appear to. What experienced players look at:
- Outline before detail. Hair shape survives heavy blur better than any facial feature. Cloud's spikes, Lightning's side-swept fringe and Sephiroth's fall of silver are recognisable long before the eyes resolve.
- Colour blocks. Greyscale hides hue but not value. A very dark mass at the top usually means dark hair or a helmet; a bright one often means blond or white.
- Art era. Sprite-derived and early-3D portraits have hard edges and a limited palette; modern renders are soft and evenly lit. This alone splits the roster into rough date ranges, which pairs well with the debut game hint.
- Silhouette width. Armoured characters such as Steiner or Gabranth read as broad blocks, while mages and rogues taper. Non-human races break the outline entirely.
Common questions
Can I see the portrait before guessing?
Only blurred. The image is rendered as a CSS background rather than a normal image element, so it cannot be dragged out or saved to bypass the puzzle.
Is it the same character as the other modes?
No. Each mode draws its own answer, so the silhouette, the character grid, the quote and the emoji rebus are four different subjects on any given day.
Does everyone see the same portrait?
Yes, worldwide, changing at 00:00 UTC.
The other daily puzzles
Character compares seven attributes on a grid, Quote gives you a real line of dialogue with the speaker redacted, Emoji uses a five-emoji rebus, and Summon swaps the roster for the series' 91 summons. Browse every portrait in the character index.
