Final Fantasy Tactics

1997 · PlayStation · the War of the Lions

Final Fantasy Tactics is the largest single cast in this roster, and the reason is its subject: a civil war with dozens of named participants on several sides. Ramza, a minor noble, spends the game watching his childhood friend Delita climb over everyone towards a throne, while the church quietly turns the war into a summoning ritual.

It is the series’ sharpest script. The story is told as a suppressed historical account, in which the person remembered as the hero is not the person who did the work, a structure that pays off in the final line and has kept the game in circulation for nearly thirty years.

Its job system is the deepest in the series, and it names classes explicitly, which makes this game unusually reliable for the job tile. Where a character has a stated class (Wiegraf is a Knight, Agrias a Holy Knight), the puzzles use it rather than an interpretation.

The biggest cast in the roster at 36, weighted heavily towards antagonists thanks to the war’s many factions and the Lucavi behind them.
