How to play finalfantasydle
finalfantasydle is a daily deduction game about the Final Fantasy series. Every day at 00:00 UTC it picks one subject per mode — the same subject for every player on Earth — and your job is to identify it in as few guesses as possible. There is no timer, no guess limit and no account to create.
If you have played Wordle the shape will be familiar, but the comparison is richer: instead of letters, finalfantasydle compares attributes. Guess a character and you immediately learn whether the answer shares their game, their role, their class, their weapon and their era.
Reading the hint grid
Every guess adds a row to the grid. Each cell in that row compares one attribute of your guess against the same attribute of the hidden answer:
- Green — exact match. The answer shares this attribute with your guess. Lock it in and stop testing it.
- Amber — close, but not equal. On a multi-value attribute like job it means you got one of several right (your guess is a Knight and a Royal, the answer is a Knight but not a Royal). On a number like debut year it means you are within three years.
- Grey — no overlap. Nothing in this attribute is shared. Every candidate with that value is eliminated.
- ↑↓ Arrows — higher or lower. On numeric attributes (debut year, number of appearances) the arrow points toward the answer.
A wrong guess is never wasted: it always eliminates candidates. Good players deliberately guess characters they know are wrong because those guesses split the roster most evenly.
The four modes
01 · Character
The flagship mode. Identify the character of the day from a guessable roster of 527, spanning every mainline entry plus the spin-offs. Seven attributes are compared: gender, race, job or class, signature weapon, story role, source game and debut year. Because the roster leans heavily on the mainline games, opening with a well-known party member from a mid-series title tends to cut the field fastest. The full list is browsable in the character index.
02 · Summon
Espers, eidolons, aeons, Guardian Forces, Astrals, Eikons — 91 of them. Four attributes are compared: elemental affinity, debut game, debut year and the number of games the summon has appeared in. That last one is the most informative attribute in the game: the pillars of the series (Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut) sit in double digits while one-off summons sit at one, so a single guess often halves the field. Browse them all in the summon index.
03 · Silhouette
A character portrait appears heavily blurred and drained of colour — a shape and not much else. Name it. Every wrong guess sharpens the image a step, so the portrait resolves as you close in, and colour returns only when you get it right. Two clues sit above the picture and help from the start: the character's debut title and the first letter of their name. Distinctive shapes — oversized weapons, unusual headgear, non-human proportions — give themselves away long before the details arrive.
04 · Quote
A famous line from the series appears with every name in it redacted. Work out who said it. You are not left with the text alone: five pieces of intel sit under the quote — debut game, debut year, race, class and the first letter of the name — and one more unlocks with every wrong guess. This is the mode where series veterans pull ahead, because tone, vocabulary and translation style often place a line in its game before you recognise the speaker.
How the daily answer is chosen
The answer is derived from the date itself rather than from a random draw: the number of days since the Unix epoch is run through a small deterministic generator, with a different offset per mode so the four puzzles are drawn independently of one another. Because the date drives everything, every player sees an identical puzzle and the emoji grid you share is directly comparable to your friends'. The rollover is 00:00 UTC.
Your streak, win rate and guess distribution live in your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded, which also means your stats do not follow you to another device or survive clearing your browser data.
Frequently asked questions
- Is finalfantasydle free to play?
- Yes. Every mode is free, there is no account, no sign-up and no download. The site is supported by advertising.
- How often does the answer change?
- Once a day, at 00:00 UTC. Every player in the world gets the same subject on the same day, which is what makes sharing your result grid meaningful.
- How many guesses do I get?
- Unlimited. finalfantasydle scores you on how few guesses you needed rather than cutting you off, so a hard day is a puzzle rather than a loss.
- Where is my progress stored?
- In your browser only, using localStorage. There is no account and nothing is sent to a server, so clearing your browser data resets your streak and statistics.
- Which Final Fantasy games are covered?
- All of them, and then some: the mainline entries from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy XVI, plus Tactics, Type-0, the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, the Ivalice titles, the Crystal Chronicles spin-offs and more — 527 characters and 91 summons in total.
- Can I play yesterday’s puzzle?
- No. Each puzzle is live for one day only. Once the clock rolls over at 00:00 UTC a fresh subject takes its place, and the Character and Summon pages show you what the previous day’s answer was.
