Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
2003 · Game Boy Advance · a boy who wishes the world away
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance takes the tactical system to a much stranger premise. Marche and his schoolfriends are pulled into a version of Ivalice built from a magic book, and the game asks a genuinely uncomfortable question: the boy who wanted to escape is disabled, the girl who wanted to escape has a dying mother, and Marche spends the game dismantling the fantasy they would rather live in.
Mechanically it is best known for the law system, which bans specific actions in each battle and penalises you for breaking them, forcing you to re-plan around arbitrary constraints.
The race system is central here in a way it is not in most entries: Hume, Bangaa, Nu Mou, Viera and Moogle each have their own exclusive job trees, so a character’s species genuinely determines what they can be.

A cast where race and job are tightly linked, making those two tiles unusually correlated in this game.
