Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light

2009 · Nintendo DS · the direct ancestor of Bravely Default

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light is a storybook RPG with a hard edge: no party-wide targeting, a single shared item pool, and a crown system that changes each character’s class. Its design team went on to make Bravely Default, and the lineage is obvious in everything from the job structure to the art.

Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita and Aire begin the game separated and spend much of it working alone or in pairs, which is unusual for a four-hero structure and gives each of them a genuine arc rather than a role.

The crowns are the reason job data here needs care: a character can wear any of them, so the puzzles file each one under the class the story associates with them rather than whatever they can equip.

A small, tightly written cast whose classes are narrative rather than mechanical, so job tiles reflect story roles.
