Final Fantasy Type-0
2011 · PSP · fourteen cadets in a war that erases the dead
Final Fantasy Type-0 is the darkest entry the series has produced. Orience is at war, the four nations are grinding each other down, and Class Zero, fourteen cadets named after playing cards, are deployed as weapons. The game opens on a dying soldier and does not soften from there.
Its central conceit is that when someone dies in Orience, the memory of them is taken from everyone who knew them. Grief is impossible because nobody remembers there was anything to grieve, and the cadets, who can remember, are the exception that makes the story work.
The fourteen leads all fight, all have distinct weapons (cards, a scythe, a flute, a whip), and are filed as party members here, which is why this game contributes so many playable characters for its size.
