Final Fantasy VII

1997 · PlayStation · the entry that made the series global

Final Fantasy VII moved the series to 3D, to the PlayStation, and to an audience many times larger than it had before. Midgar, a plate city drawing the life out of the planet beneath it, did as much of that work as any character: an opening act about eco-terrorists bombing a reactor was not what players expected from a fantasy RPG in 1997.

Its cast has since been extended by an entire Compilation (Before Crisis, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, and the Remake trilogy), which is why this game shows up so often in the source game tile. Note the rule the puzzles apply: characters are filed under the game they appeared in first, so nobody from the 1997 original is filed under Remake or Rebirth, and Cissnei belongs to Before Crisis rather than Crisis Core.

Sephiroth remains the series’ defining antagonist, and Aerith’s death the moment most cited when people argue that games could do what other media do.
