Final Fantasy X-2
2003 · PlayStation 2 · the series’ first direct sequel
Final Fantasy X-2 was the first true sequel in the series, and it deliberately refused to repeat the tone of the game it followed. Spira two years on is a place of treasure hunting, rival factions and a pop concert, played by a party of three women with a dressphere system that swaps their classes mid-battle.
The lightness is a structure rather than an accident: the game is about what people do with a future they were never supposed to have. Yuna, who spent the previous game walking towards her death, spends this one deciding what she wants.
For the puzzles it matters mainly for who debuts here rather than in Final Fantasy X: Nooj, Baralai, Gippal, Paine, Lenne, Shinra and Buddy are all 2003, not 2001.
This cast in the puzzles
A frequent source of debut-year traps, because so much of its cast is assumed to come from Final Fantasy X.
