Final Fantasy XI

2002 · the series’ first MMO, and still running

Final Fantasy XI took the series online in 2002 and has stayed there ever since. Vana’diel is shared rather than authored around one hero, which changes what a character even is: the protagonist is your own adventurer, so everyone in this roster is someone you meet rather than someone you play.

Its five playable races (Hume, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Mithra and Galka) were the series’ first attempt at a world where humans are one option among several, and they are all represented on the race tile. Beyond them sit the Zilart and the Kuluu, two ancient peoples whose history drives the original storyline.

The game’s Trust system, added years later, lets you summon AI versions of story characters to fight alongside you. That is why so much of this cast is filed as party rather than NPC: if a character fights in your group, the puzzles count them as party, whether you control them directly or not.

This cast in the puzzles

No protagonist at all (the player character is absent from the roster), and an unusually high party count thanks to Trusts.
