Final Fantasy XIII

2009 · the l’Cie, the fal’Cie, and a cast under sentence

Final Fantasy XIII opens with its six leads already condemned. Branded l’Cie by god-machines called fal’Cie, they are given a task they are not told and a deadline they cannot read: complete it and be crystallised, fail and become a monster. The entire game runs on that clock.

It is the most linear entry in the series and the most argued about, but the premise is unusually pure: six strangers with nothing in common except a death sentence, forced to decide whether to obey it.

The mythology introduced here, with Etro, Lindzei, Pulse and Bhunivelze, is worth flagging for the quote puzzle. Texts that read like their words are usually prayers addressed to them by someone else, which is why those entities carry no quote in this game.

A compact playable cast with a large mythological layer above it, most of which are deities rather than antagonists in the fighting sense.
