Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV launched in 2010 to reviews bad enough that Square Enix took the extraordinary step of destroying the world in-fiction and rebuilding the game from nothing. A Realm Reborn relaunched it in 2013, and it has since become one of the most story-driven MMOs in the genre.

Its cast is built around the Scions of the Seventh Dawn (Y’shtola, Thancred, Alphinaud, Alisaie, Urianger and the rest), who accompany the player across an expansion arc spanning more than a decade of real time. Because the player character is the protagonist, no one in this roster carries that role.

The races here are among the most specific in the series: Elezen, Miqo’te, Lalafell, Roegadyn, Au Ra and Hrothgar, alongside the Hyur that the puzzles file simply as human. The Ancients of Amaurot, Emet-Selch and Lahabrea among them, are a separate people entirely, and the reason the race tile has an Ancient value at all.
