Final Fantasy XV
2016 · four friends, one car, and a kingdom already lost
Final Fantasy XV spent ten years in development and came out as a road trip. Noctis and three friends drive across a continent towards a wedding that is already a trap, and the game gives you a long stretch of fishing, camping and cooking before it tells you what has actually happened back home.
The party never changes: Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto are the whole of it, and the game is structured so that their friendship is the thing being tested rather than the world being saved. That is unusual for the series and it is the reason the ending works for the players it works for.
Its cast extends into Kingsglaive, the 2016 film covering the fall of Insomnia from another angle. Characters introduced there (Nyx Ulric, Libertus, Crowe, Titus Drautos) are filed under Kingsglaive rather than Final Fantasy XV, and Regis is a supporting character in the film rather than its lead.
