Final Fantasy XVI
2023 · Valisthea, the Dominants, and a full move to action combat
Final Fantasy XVI dropped turn-based combat entirely for real-time action, and told a story closer to political tragedy than to fantasy adventure. Valisthea is dying: its Mothercrystals are being drained, its nations are fighting over what is left, and the people who can channel the Eikons are used as weapons by whoever holds them.
Those people are the Dominants, and the game’s central idea is that being one is a curse rather than a gift. Clive spends the story working out who decided the world should run this way, and the answer reframes everything before it.
Note that Dominant is a status rather than a species: the cast here is almost entirely human, and Eikons such as Ifrit and Phoenix belong to the summon roster rather than this one.
This cast in the puzzles
A human cast with a heavy antagonist share, and one where the race tile does almost no work.
